Company History
I had been running IT departments for small companies for many years and I noticed that sometimes I was doing what a low level tech could do, but other times what I knew and who I knew from years of experience earned me my whole year's salary with one or two incidents that lasted one week or less. Most of those times involved upgrading software, hardware, network infrastructure, or giving upper management advice on their current and future IT needs.
It was there that I started wondering if there wouldn't be a way where company's couldn't just pay for the 10 0r 20% of my brain that was the best for them and have lesser level people doing the other work at lower levels of pay.
Then I went on an interview where the company only had 15 computers but they were ready to pay a premium price to get someone like myself with senior level IT skills on board because they realized they were so dependent on the day to day operation of their computers and the information they held in them, along with their ability to connect them to their clients, that my cost would be a small insurance policy against larger disasters.
So I put two and two together and realized there had to be hundreds of these sized businesses in my own back yard (Ventura, CA) that needed this type of help just as desparately, but weren't necesarily ready to pony up the full time wages and all of the overhead that goes along with an employee.
So I came up with a plan to work 1 day per week for 5 of these companies.
But I also found that there was another need and that was for someone to not just come in once a week, but for someone to come in for a short period of time 3 - 5 days a week while they got over the hurdle of upgrading their systems on a per project basis.
